Web traffic is a big deal, at least to some people. But to a lot of other people, it is practically a non-issue. Why is it that some folks worship the proverbial ground that their visitor counter would walk on if it had feet? And why, when it is such a big deal to some people, is web traffic essentially ignored by some other web masters? Obviously, these are two different sets of people who have two different sets of priorities in their minds. So when you think about these two different types of people, you have got to keep in mind their different view points, so that you can understand them more effectively. Blanket solutions never work out.
As for the folks who worship their traffic counter, their motivation is primarily that of a big ego. If they had a smaller one, they might realize that it is very important to target great traffic (as in the people who will buy things and make you wealthier), as opposed to simply counting out the hits and patting themselves on the back when they reach a certain number. Granted, no truly successful site ever succeeded on near zero traffic. But in a lot of cases, a site can be ten times as successful as another, even when it has only a quarter of the traffic.
The people who are really interested in growing wealthier as a result of their traffic realize that, like the number of lovers one has in a lifetime, this is a number which only matters to your ego. If your site gets 50 great people coming to it in an average day, you are going to accomplish far more than you would if you got a thousand people who will simply check it out, nod their heads and then leave. While it is great to help other people, getting paid also rules.
